The American Battlefield Trust “Park Day” event at Petersburg National Battlefield will no longer take place at the Eastern Front Unit, located off Route 36. The new location will be at the General Grant’s Headquarters Unit located at 1001 Pecan Avenue in Hopewell. People interested in registering to volunteer to help maintain the site where the longest event of the Civil War occurred can contact Volunteer Coordinator Ann Blumenschine at (804) 732-3531 ext. 203 or by e-mail at Ann_Blumenschine@nps.gov. Registered volunteers should plan to meet in the parking lot of the General Grant’s Headquarters Unit at 8:30 am. Work will commence at approximately 9:00 am and end at about 12:00 pm. Registered volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, wear weather appropriate dress and bring a refillable water bottle.
About Park Day
Civil War Trust created Park Day in 1996 and each year thousands of people volunteer in what the organization calls, “a hands-on preservation event to help Civil War battlefields and historic sites take on maintenance projects large and small”. Approximately 100 sites from coast to coast have signed up to participate this year. For more information about “Park Day” visit American Battlefield Trust’s (formerly known as Civil War Trust) web site at https://www.battlefields.org/events/park-day
If you go
The General Grant’s Headquarters Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is where Ulysses S. Grant made his headquarters during the 292 day siege of Petersburg (June, 1864-April, 1865). Numerous wayside exhibits and the visitor contact station not only focus on General Grant’s time at City Point but also focus on the area’s vital importance to the Union army as one of the largest supply bases in the nation. This unit of Petersburg National Battlefield also tells the story of the civilians, free and enslaved, who lived and worked at Appomattox Plantation prior to the Civil War. The visitor contact station is open seasonally when staffing permits. For more information, please contact Petersburg National Battlefield at (804) 732-3531 ext. 200.
