We are excited to invite you to the " Don't Cry for Me" art exhibit an event hosted by the Petersburg National Battlefield and the Ibe' Arts Institute. The event will be at Resist Booksellers in downtown Petersburg, from 6-9pm on August 4th. The event is open to the public. This summer the park’s Urban Archeology Corps interns created art pieces about the stories of the enslaved community at Whitehill Plantation as a part of the Enslaved Field Laborers Project (EFLP). Interns also learned basis excavation skills, oral history, and public archeology. Come out learn more about the stories of the enslaved community as well as learn about the Urban Archeology Corps internship. Throughout the next two weeks we will have posts from each intern. We hope to see you there!
About The Enslaved Field Laborers Project (EFLP)
The EFLP offers an opportunity to contextualize the world of enslaved people living in Petersburg and explore their lives. The project's specific goal is to understand better and interpret the daily life and experiences of African American women, men, and families who lived at the field quarters on Whitehill Plantation during the 1800s. The National Park Service and Petersburg National Battlefield are interested in examining how enslaved people created homes and families, asserted their humanity and dignity, and sought to survive and resist the institution of slavery. The information and knowledge gathered can then help interpret the lives of those enslaved throughout the surrounding area.
