PETERSBURG, VA – Petersburg National Battlefield will host Crater Days Saturday, July 29th, and Sunday July 30th, 2023. It will commemorate the 159th anniversary of the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864. Learn about this powerful story and interact with living historians on the battlefield. Formal programs begin at 10 AM and 2 PM each day.
Living historians will have an encampment at the Crater. They will be available for discussions between programs.
Formal programs will begin at the Crater parking area at 10 AM and 2 PM each day. It will include a walking tour of the battlefield and living history demonstrations. Each program will be around 90 minutes.
On Saturday at the Eastern Front Visitor Center, there will be displays focused on the civilian experience from 10 AM to 4 PM.
If you go
Start at the Petersburg National Battlefield’s Eastern Front Visitor Center, open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily at 5001 Siege Road, Petersburg, VA, 23803. The Crater Battlefield is four miles down the tour road from the Visitor Center. The grounds are open from 9 AM to 8 PM. Please bring water, sun protection, and wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather.
