Honolulu– Memorial Day marks the 60th Anniversary of official opening of the USS Arizona Memorial.And from May 31 through July 15 visitors are welcome to view a free temporary exhibit in the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Classroom at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center (1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu HI 96818).
This exhibit features the life and works of renown Honolulu architect Alfred Preis (pronounced Price), who as a young child along with his Austrian family were interred at Sand Island Detention Facility following the December 7,1941, attack and the United States subsequent entry into World War II triggered by the Tripartite Pact. The exhibit will be available daily from 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Preis, after his submission was chosen for the USS Arizona Memorial designed and continued to assist the U.S. Navy free of charge. Preis’ contribution to Honolulu architecture can also be seen at the iconic Honolulu Zoo entrance station and though numerous private homes on the island of Oahu.
This temporary exhibit has been made possible by the generous support of our non-profit cooperating association Pacific Historic Parks, and the Austrian Consulate.
Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a fee free site, reservations are not required to enter the Visitor Center, view the museums, temporary exhibit, or park film at this time. Reservations are recommended for the USS Arizona Memorial Program and required for the Ford Island Bus Tour to see the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma Memorials.
