The National Park Service at Pearl Harbor National Memorial in cooperation with the United States Navy, and Pacific Historic Parks will host a Day of Remembrance in honor of the entire crew of the USS Arizona on the day of interment of the final crew member that survived the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr. Louis A. (Lou) Conter, passed away on April 1, 2024 and will be laid to rest on the morning of April 23, 2024 near his hometown in Grass Valley, California. Conter celebrated his 102nd birthday in September 2023. In tribute to the entire crew of the USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor National Memorial will host a private ceremony on the Arizona Memorial that morning, after which the visiting public can take part in honoring these men through participating in floral offerings, listening to bagpipe tributes, joining us for a moment of silence just after noon, or watching the flag raised back to full staff at the end of boat operations around 3:45 pm. These events will help to commemorate the end of an era and our commitment to continue to honor the legacy of courage, sacrifice, service, and dedication that will forever mark the over 1500 service members that made up the crew of the USS Arizona. Pacific Historic Parks and National Park Service staff will provide flower petals and cards with the names of all the just over 1500 crew members of the 12/7/1941 USS Arizona for ceremony participants and visitors to connect with and use for ceremonial floral offerings on the Memorial throughout the day.
