Pecos, NM: Pecos National Historical Park will receive a field trip grant for the 2018-2019 school year from the National Park Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service. Students from local communities will visit the park, learning about its peoples, ecosystems, and landscapes. This grant is part of the Foundation’s Open OutDoors for Kids program which creates pathways for kids to explore and connect with national park experiences.

“Trekking along trails, observing our natural ecosystems and engaging with our shared history are experiences that benefit all children,” said National Park Foundation President Will Shafroth. “Making it possible for America’s youth to explore our national parks is an investment in their future and the future of the national parks community.”

At Pecos, the grant will help support transportation and education costs for students in local majority-minority communities in coming to the park. Third and fourth grade students from Pecos Elementary and El Dorado Community School will receive visits from park rangers and educators from the New Mexico Wildlife Center, explore their park, and discover the interconnectedness of history and culture in this unique crossroads of history through a series of on-site and in school visits.

Park Superintendent Karl Cordova noted that “Pecos National Historical Park is proud to work with Open OutDoors for Kids to bring a quality environmental education program to the community. Local youth are an important part of a shared stewardship for our environment and we enjoy working with all of our partners to bring a fun and educational experience to the community.”
