Padre Island National Seashore (PAIS) strongly encourages the participation of academic and independent scientists in the park science program. The more that is understood about the natural, cultural, and historic resources that exist at PAIS, along with an understanding of visitors and how they use the park, the better the park will be able to manage its resources. To familiarize yourself with previous research that has been conducted at the park, please visit the NPS Research Permit and Reporting System website and examine the archive of Investigator's Annual Reports.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to read the instruction set and general guidelines posted on the website prior to completing the Application Form (see NPS procedures and requirements).
Investigators are encouraged to apply at least 90-days before they intend to enter the park to conduct research in order to allow the application to process.
Persons conducting multi-year projects may request a permit valid for up to five years.
Research teams are required to notify the park whenever they plan on entering the park to conduct research activities to discuss current conditions, possible closures, etc. These procedures have been established to ensure the safety of researchers working in the field and to avoid conflict with other park activities.
Fee Waivers - Investigators engaged in approved research projects in the park are entitled to a fee waiver for entry into the park. Camping fee waivers are not granted, but fee-free camping is allow on North and South Beach.
