US Park Rangers of Fire Island National Seashore are seeking the public's help to find those responsible for several recent acts of vandalism.
During the overnight or early morning hours between July 16-26, 2020, someone wrote graffiti on the historic Fire Island Lighthouse as well as the side of the restroom structure near the park entrance. The vandalism to the lighthouse is believed to have taken place over the course of two nights, resulting in a lengthy essay transcribed on the lower panel. The #FindYourPark photo sign was also broken.
Vandalism hurts. The more than 400 sites across the National Park System preserve and protect our nation's unique natural and cultural heritage. Graffiti is vandalism, and is often extremely difficult to remove. Repair of vandalized sites, if possible, is costly and time consuming, and often cannot restore the site to its former condition. Defacing any park of the national park or other public land you visit hurts, and it degrades the experience of other visitors. These acts are also illegal. You can help protect our treasured public lands. When you visit, enjoy them and do no harm.
If you have information that could help this investigation, or if you were in the park between July 16-26, please contact us. Information from other visitors is often very helpful to investigators. You don't have to tell us who you are, but please tell us what you know:
