SAN FRANCISCO - The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Anne Doherty-Stephan to serve as the superintendent of César E. Chávez National Monument in Keene. She currently serves as the director of resources and curation at Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas. She will begin her new role in late May.

“Anne brings 35 years of National Park Service experience in cultural and resource management to this new role,” said Regional Director Frank Lands. “That expertise coupled with her work with Latinx communities and partners at a peace park on the U.S.-Mexico Border, make her a great fit for this position.”

In her current role, which Stephan has held since 2011, she is a member of the park’s management team. She is responsible for overseeing visitor services, partnerships, grant writing, project management, environmental compliance, museum collections and archives, and public information. Stephan has worked at nine national parks throughout her career and held various positions including acting site manager at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site, chief of interpretation and education at Missouri National Recreational River, education program manager at Mount Rainier National Park, education specialist at White Sands National Park, and as a park ranger at Carlsbad Caverns and Petrified Forest national parks and Muir Woods National Monument.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve as the superintendent at César E. Chávez National Monument,” said Stephan. “I’m excited about the opportunity to work with the community, the National Chávez Center, and other partners to share with visitors the struggles and achievements of the broader farm worker movement throughout the United States and help shape the future of this park.”
Stephan began her NPS career as a student hire while completing her bachelor’s degree in natural resources interpretation at Humboldt State University. She became a full-time park ranger upon graduation and later earned a master’s degree in education from City University in Washington and completed doctoral work in adult and higher education at the University of South Dakota. She is also a Gallup Certified and Eddie Villa Trained Strengths Coach.
Anne is married to Jeff Stephan and they currently have five rescue dogs on their hacienda, Casa de Osos. She enjoys making organic, hand-crafted personal care products, sharing natural wellness solutions with others, reading, doing puzzles, and walking in nature. She is looking forward to exploring and finding a new home in the Keene area.
