A search is currently underway for a climber reported missing late in the evening on July 18. Sean Allen is a 38-year-old male, 5’10” tall, 145 pounds with brown hair. Allen had a wilderness permit for July 16-18 and was travelling solo with an intended route from Royal Basin to Home Lake. Allen’s itinerary included potential climbing attempts at Mount Mystery, Hal Foss Peak, and Little Mystery. Sean was carrying a green Osprey backpack, ice axe and crampons, and using a green Nemo tent. He was likely wearing a black hat (see photo for reference).
Search and Rescue personnel hiked into the wilderness on Tuesday to begin a hasty search of the area after Allen was reported missing. The National Park Service exclusive-use contract helicopter from North Cascades National Park was also activated to assist with the search on Tuesday and is continuing today.
Search teams from Olympic National Park and Olympic Mountain Rescue are in the field today covering routes from the Upper Dungeness Trail and around Royal Basin. Washington State Search and Rescue Planning Unit is assisting with the search and additional resources are being coordinated. Park staff are contacting wilderness permit holders who were in the area at the same time of Allen’s itinerary.
