Port Angeles, Wash. - On Monday, October 16, Olympic National Park’s fire team will begin burning isolated debris piles. Operations will only be scheduled during safe weather windows and will likely conclude in mid-December. The debris piles are located in the Sol Duc, Elwha, Hoh, Kalaloch, and Quinault maintenance areas of Olympic National Park.
Road clearing and facilities maintenance operations generate large amounts of woody debris. Pile burning is the most convenient and cost-effective method of disposal.
Smoke will be visible at times from nearby trails and roadways while the burns are in progress. Fire crews will remain on scene and manage the burns until the fires are out. Smoke impacts are expected to be minimal.
