At approximately 8:45 PM (ET) on August 1, 2021, a 32-year-old male visitor was last seen fishing from an inflatable kayak in calm water. The victim had a life jacket in the boat but was not wearing it and reportedly could not swim. Shortly thereafter his kayak was seen floating upside down.

A search by park staff and local agencies ensued but was unsuccessful that evening. The search resumed around 7:00 AM on
August 2. The victim's body was located around 1:20 PM by an underwater drone near the point last seen in approximately 4.5 feet of water. The victim's body was transported to the bank where he was pronounced dead by the medical examiner.

The incident is still under investigation and an autopsy will be performed, but observations thus far support accidental drowning as the cause of death.

Visitors are reminded that rivers can be deadly, even if the water looks calm. It is essential to always wear a personal floatation device and know your abilities and water conditions before entering the water.

Additional information regarding the deceased man will be released after family notifications have been made.
