Obed Wild & Scenic River is pleased to announce it has been awarded a competitive grant through Eastern National to support its Dark Sky Park initiatives.Recently, Obed was recognized by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) as a Dark Sky Park. With this designation, the Obed became only the second national park unit east of Colorado to be recognized as an IDA Dark Sky Park. The designation recognizes the Obed’s exceptional dark sky conditions as well as the park’s strong commitment to preserving our night sky resource for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of present and future generations.
Obed’s Dark Sky Park initiatives are focused on providing visitors an in-depth look into the night sky while promoting its importance as a global resource. The Eastern National grant will enable the park to develop interpretive wayside exhibits to highlight the park’s dark sky resource with planned display locations at the park’s night sky viewing locations.
Founded in 1947, Eastern National is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit cooperating association, supporting the interpretive, educational and scientific programs and services of the National Park Service and other public trust partners.
For more information about the Obed’s night sky and astronomy programming, contact the park at (423) 346-6294.
