The Obed Wild and Scenic River put together its first Kids Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 11th. A total of 17 kids participated in the tournament at the Nemo section of the park. At least 73 other visitors also witnessed the competition, making it one of the best-attended events of the year. Prizes were awarded to the kids catching the three biggest fish. Claiming first prize was seven-year-old Kaitlyn Massengale of Lancing, who caught a 10-ounce smallmouth bass. The event was seen as more than just a fun activity, however. It offered kids an opportunity that many do not have. "In today's society," said one parent, "kids are so into video games and cellphones, it's great that they have something outdoors like this to do." The Obed WSR has plans in the works to have more kids fishing tournaments in the future. |
