WARTBURG, Tennessee - Dr Steven McBride will be presenting an interactive talk at the Obed Visitors Center on "The Civil War on the Cumberland Plateau: Its Impact on Civilian Populations" on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 starting at 10am Eastern time. Although no large scale Civil War battles were fought upon the upper Cumberland Plateau, it was the scene of intensive guerrilla warfare, vendetta raids and murder, robbery, farm destruction, and a few small scale military actions.This period of ongoing irregular warfare, often involving such well known guerrillas as Champ Ferguson and Tinker Dave Beatty and near anarchy led to significant loss of life and property, much emotional distress, the abandonment of the region by many citizens, and a great reduction in county and town government.The war also resulted in the destruction of slavery. This presentation will involve lecture and discussion on this fascinating and emotional chapter of local history. All are welcome to this event and there is no charge. Dr. McBride is a professor at the University of Kentucky and works at the Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park.This lecture is a part of a project funded by a "Teaching History and Civics' Grant obtained by the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and the Obed Wild and Scenic River.The project overall objective was to provide local middle and high teachers in Morgan, TN, Scott TN, Pickett, TN, Fentress, TN, and McCreary KY counties with locale specific information describing the actions and effect of the Civil War in the upper Cumberland Plateau. |
