Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning (TCWP) recently purchased two tracts of land within the boundaries of the Obed Wild and Scenic River using a grant from the State of Tennessee. One 90-acre tract is located on the Obed River above the mouth of Daddys Creek. The second 24-acre tract is located on Clear Creek below Barnett Bridge. Both tracts adjoin other Obed park lands and contain prime examples of the remarkable resources that the park was established to preserve. Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning is dedicated to achieving and perpetuating protection of natural lands and waters by means of public ownership, legislation, or cooperation of the private sector. "It is vitally important that we protect the spectacular gorges of the Obed Wild and Scenic River," said TCWP President Jimmy Groton, "and the purchase of these two tracts is an important step towards that end. TCWP is committed to work with the National Park Service, the State of Tennessee, and our other conservation partners to seek long-term protection of these sensitive lands." Obed Superintendent Niki Stephanie Nicholas echoed Groton's sentiments. "Our mission is to preserve the Obed unimpaired for future generations, and we simply could not achieve this goal without the help of partners such as the Tennessee Citizens for Wildness Planning," said Superintendent Nicholas.
