All Open Fires Prohibited Due to Very Dry Conditions

Due to the extremely dry conditions currently being experienced, park officials have determined that it is necessary to prohibit the use of all open fires and activities, which unduly increase fire danger.

The term "open fires" refers to any flame source not immediately extinguishable or controllable and applies to any form of wood or charcoal-based fire, even in established fire rings.

Superintendent Niki Stephanie Nicholas announced the ban today, in an effort to lessen the dangers of wildfires in the park. She noted the only exception would be the use of portable stoves that use pressurized gas, liquid fuel, propane or alcohol are still permitted but must be monitored at all times and fully extinguished after use.

Superintendent Nicholas further noted that the ban would be lifted only after sufficient rainfall has been received and soil moisture increased significantly.

While there are currently no active wildfires burning at Obed Wild & Scenic River, there are many active fires burning in the Southeast. Wildland fire managers ask visitors and residents to stay informed of fire danger and changing conditions.
