Camping and Backcountry Permits

While certain overnight sites along the trail require reservations, generally overnight sites are first come, first serve, Please check ahead with the responsible agency or landowner for specific information about the portion of the trail you wish to visit.

Backcountry permits are required for hiking the NCT within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI (if you plan to camp overnight there) and on the Kekekabic and Border Route Trails within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, MN. Contact these sites directly to obtain a backcountry permit.
