The docks at Weaver Point at the head of Lake Chelan near Stehekin will be removed for repair tomorrow, October 11. Flooding on the Stehekin River in mid-May of 2006 caused extensive damage to both sections of the dock. Since the 2003 flood, the Stehekin River has cut a new path near Weaver Point. Last May’s sudden warm weather led to rapid melting of mountain snowpack and a rise in the Stehekin River. This resulted in significant damage to the Weaver Point docks, which accommodate summer boaters using the Weaver Point Campground and hiking in the area. National Park Service maintenance staff will remove both docks, which are not normally accessible in the winter months due to low lake levels. The docks will be replaced in the spring when the lake level allows access. Weaver Point Campground is still open to hikers. However, due to freezing temperatures, the water system at the camp will be drained for the winter. Pit toilets are available. Please pack out all garbage. The Stehekin Landing marina and the Purple Point docks by the Purple Point Campground further up the lake are still available. The Stehekin Landing marina is accessible all year. |
