The North Cascades National Park Service Complex Artists-in-Residence program has expanded to Stehekin, enabling the park to host two artists this spring. The purpose of the three year old program is to invite artists to immerse themselves in the park and its people so that park visitors, staff, and neighbors may be provided with opportunities to explore the meanings and significance of park resources in new and unique ways through presentations, workshops, or performances. The artists also donate to the park a work of art representative of their residency.
Sally Ranzau will be the Artist-in-Residence in Stehekin from May 2 through May 23. She and her husband live in Winthrop, Washington where they own North Cascades Frame and Company. Sally describes herself as "a photographer who likes to tell stories" and her current medium is digital photography -- capturing intimate landscapes and the personality of bird species. Inspired by the North Cascades, Sally recently designed, wrote and self-published her first book, "Visitors & Natives: A Seasonal Observation". Sally plans to spend her residency investigating spring bird migration, living with, recovering from and finding beauty in fire, and collecting stories of people who find solace and joy in traveling the high country. Kevin Bernstein is the Artist-in-Residence in Newhalem. He arrived at the park April 18 and will be in residence through May 24. He recently earned his Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Washington and lives in Seattle. Kevin is a painter who is "interested in humankind's relationship to nature and how its role in society has changed throughout history" and is looking forward to the opportunity to explore beyond the park's "majestic scenic beauty" and "take notice of its smallest wonders." He works in the herbarium at the Burke Museum and is a member of the Puget Sound Mycological Society and the Seattle Lichen Guild -- interests that are conveyed through his paintings.
