Inspired by the forthcoming September airing on PBS of the six-part documentary series, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, North Cascades National Park Complex presents a free summer speaker series at the Newhalem Creek Campground Amphitheater* (one program takes place at the Colonial Creek Campground Amphitheater). The lineup includes conservationists, authors, professors, and park resource professionals. Programs begin at 8:30 p.m. and last between 45 minutes and one hour. Directions: The Newhalem Creek Campground is located along the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) at milepost 120, just west of the town of Newhalem. Cross the one-lane bridge over the Skagit River, continue past the registration station, and turn right at the four-way stop. The amphitheater is located in Loop A, across from campsite 13. STAFF PICK: Make it a Newhalem weekend! The Newhalem Creek Campground contains 114 campsites for $12 per night. Two of the campground’s three loops are available on a first-come first-served basis. Reservations are available for the third loop and for group sites at https://www.recreation.gov. Stop by the North Cascades Visitor Center and pick up a free Junior Ranger booklet or borrow a free Family Fun Pack. Hike the network of family-friendly trails along the Skagit River and through the forest to interesting sites like the Rockshelter – a natural shelter above Newhalem Creek that has been used by native people for over 1,400 years.
