Rainbow Fire Update

Sedro Woolley, WA – The Rainbow Fire remains active in Lake Chelan National Recreation Area within North Cascades National Park Service Complex. The fire is approximately two acres in size and was detected on Monday, July 10.   

Ten smokejumpers are on the ground to engage the fire. Yesterday, crews utilized two helicopters and two fire boss scooper planes for aerially delivered water to support firefighters on the ground. Water support continues today with helicopters and fire boss planes. The NOCA Fire Module is assisting with the firefighting efforts.  

The fire is in an area with exposure to winds and the hot afternoon sun which has the potential for growth as hot and dry conditions continue. The area received little rain or moisture with the thunderstorms that moved through Sunday and Monday.  

Trail and camp closures are in effect due to visitor safety concerns. Park officials have closed the Boulder Creek Trail from the junction with the Rainbow Loop and the War Creek trails, as well as Hooter, Rennie, and Reynolds Hiker and Stock camps.
