North Cascades Visitor Center Open The North Cascades National Park Visitor Center near Newhalem (State Route 20, milepost 120) will reopen this coming weekend, March 1-2, and remain open Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through May 4. Beginning May 5, the Visitor Center will be open daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. "We thank the employees of Seattle City Light for their hard work to fix the water system and enable the Visitor Center to reopen as soon as possible," said Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins. The Visitor Center was closed during February due to a break in the main water line that shut down all water resources to the Visitor Center, including restroom facilities and fire protection capabilities. Repairs were hampered by treacherous conditions caused by several feet of snow. Visitors are invited to talk with the friendly and knowledgeable park rangers at the Visitor Center, experience the educational exhibits and theater programs, and explore the network of snow-covered short trails available in the area. Scenic drivers are also invited to continue east from the Visitor Center and admire 14 miles of the park’s majestic mountain scenery to where State Route 20 remains closed for the winter at milepost 134. For additional park information, you can also call (360) 854-7200. For information on State Route 20 road conditions, please visit the Department of Transportation's updated highway information. |
