Sedro Woolley, WA – July 18, 2013 - North Cascades National Park Complex had two fires reported from Tuesday night's thunderstorms.
One was the Sourdough Chute fire on Sourdough Mountain below the lookout on the ridge. It was burning in patchy timber and brush adjacent to a rock slide chute. Aerial reconnaissance indicated that the fire appears to have burned itself out and no longer had any visible smoke. Monitoring the location will continue for the next several days.
The Arctic Dan fire was reported by staff at the Desolation Lookout on Wednesday evening at approximately 5:00 p.m. This fire is estimated to be 1/4 acre in size. It is located on the south side of the Arctic Creek drainage west of Ross Lake. The area is very steep and remote. Fuels are a combination of timber and brush with bare rock patches. The smoke column from this fire is visible and being monitored from the Desolation Lookout. No smoke was visible today as of 4:00 p.m. Fire management decisions will be based on accessibility and relative risk. Future aerial detection may be utilized.
North Cascades National Park Complex Chief Ranger Kinsey Shilling requests that visitors to the park and surrounding forests be aware of the high fire danger during these dry conditions and use caution while enjoying our public lands.
