Following a recent storm pattern with numerous lightning strikes across the park complex, a fire is active in Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. The 0.25 acre McGregor Mountain Fire was detected Wednesday evening and is currently active and smoldering with no significant growth at this time. Park officials have closed the McGregor Mountain Trail and Heaton Camp, as a precaution, due to the fire’s proximity.
Park firefighters and North Cascades Smokejumpers are on the ground to assess and engage directly on the fire’s edge. The fire is in a remote area with steep terrain. Crews plan to utilize the NPS helicopter for aerial delivered water to support firefighters on the ground.
Plans are also underway to conduct air reconnaissance to assess other areas of the park, looking for additional fires from lighting strikes.
If you see smoke or flames dial 911 or report to a park visitor or information center. Contact the Wilderness Information Center for trail information at 360-854-7245.
