Students from International School in Bellevue, Bayside Montessori School in Bellingham, Immaculate Conception Regional School in Mount Vernon, Clear Lake Elementary School, and Concrete Middle School will host the broadcast component of Climate Challenge: North Cascades National Park on October 13 at 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. PDT. They will be joined by Jeff Corwin, the popular television personality and passionate conservationist, who will lead an activity with students from Whatcom Hills Waldorf School in Bellingham.
Over 100,000 students and teachers from across the country are participating in this program, with Florida leading all of the states in registrations. “It’s fantastic that kids from the Puget Sound area will be sharing their own back yard with so many kids from Florida, and other states like Illinois and Texas, as a great place to learn about climate change,” said North Cascades National Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins.
Climate Challenge: North Cascades National Park is a free educational program for 4th through 8th grade students that explores climate change and its effects on people and ecosystems. The program has two components: a website and a televised broadcast.
The website, http://www.northcascadeseft.org, contains interactive web-based games for students and downloadable lesson plans for teachers.
The televised broadcast from North Cascades National Park will air on October 13 at 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. PDT. Register at http://www.northcascadeseft.org to receive information on how to view the broadcast on participating public television stations, via internal school satellite networks, or streamed over the internet.
Climate Challenge: North Cascades National Park has been developed as an educational resource to meet the schedules of teachers and their students. It will be available for use long after the October 13 broadcast, which will be archived at the website along with the games and lesson plans. Previous Electronic Field Trips developed by the National Park Foundation are available for use by students and teachers at https://www.nationalparks.org/eft.
