Several storm cells passed over North Cascades National Park and neighboring Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest yesterday afternoon and evening starting several small fires in the national park and on the national forest down lake from the community of Stehekin,WA. Fire personnel from Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and North Cascades National Park carried out a reconnaissance flight this morning over all four new fires to size them up and recommend resources needed. Operations on the Tolo Fire today include line building, mop-up, and bucket drops on uncontained areas of the fire. The Tolo Fire Team is planning on shuttling supplies to firefighters on the Tolo Fire early in the day so that helicopters may be free to do bucket drops on NPS fires and USFS fires if requested. Both the NPS and USFS are working together to prioritize and share limited resources that are in the area. The nation is at its highest level of preparedness, level 5, which reflects the severity of the fire situation and a national shortage of fire resources. The Domke Fire is the largest of the new fires and is located above Domke Lake, approximately 8 miles from Holden Village. USFS has ordered crews for the fire near Domke Lake. At this time, the Sheriff’s department has not issued any evacuations for Domke Lake, Lucerne or Holden. The Sheriff will continue to evaluate these areas. Recreationists need to be aware of the following Trail Closures:
A second lightning caused fire is located is near Bear Creek, three miles south of Domke Lake. The fire is ½ acres in size and burning in steep, rocky terrain. Information on the U.S. Forest Service fires may be obtained by calling (509) 682-2576.
