Sept 24: Join Mark W. McGinnis for a free presentation and dialog at the National Park Headquarters in Sedro-Woolley at 12:00 p.m. and at the Upper Skagit Library in Concrete at 7:00 p.m.
The Skagit District of North Cascades National Park is currently hosting Mark W. McGinnis for the month of September. Mark records his perceptions in plein air watercolor and “metaphysical” acrylic paintings. Mark retired five years ago after thirty years of university teaching and enjoys interacting with others. Color theory is one of Mark’s favorite topics. Watercolor sketching is a joyous diversion from Mark’s more serious studio painting. He plans to demonstrate his approach to and philosophy of watercolor sketching at the North Cascades Visitor Center near Newhalem.
The Stehekin District of North Cascades National Park is pleased to welcome artist-illustrator Angela Mele. She was an Artist-in-Residence at Glacier National Park last summer and her passion is for the lesser noticed and uncelebrated parts of our ecosystems. “As an artist and illustrator of the natural world, nothing intrigues me more than the smaller forces at work: the undergrowth of forests, colonies of lichens on ancient rock, mosses, fungi and ferns in their periods of dormancy and sudden, teeming growth,” explained Angela Mele. She will explore Stehekin’s diminutive worlds in watercolor and gouache from mid-September through October.
Works from many previous Artists-in-Residence is on display at the North Cascades and Golden West Visitor Centers. Additional information about the park’s Artist-in-Residence Program is available at https://www.nps.gov/noca/supportyourpark/artist-in-residence.htm
