Nine lightning-caused fires are active across North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Most are in remote areas of the Stephen Mather Wilderness. Three fires are in proximity to the Copper Loop Trail system and two are near the Brush Creek Trail in the Whatcom Pass area.
Firefighters have notified affected visitors and provided alternate routes out of the closure area. Crews are actively gathering information to develop safe and effective strategic plans to implement a confine and contain strategy on the fires located near the Copper Loop and the Brush Creek trails. Firefighters continue to monitor and assess the remaining fires.
Smoke from fires in the park may be visible but is not expected to impact western Washington or Canada through Tuesday, August 30. Smoke models show smoke could impact communities in eastern Washington. Take precautions when recreating outdoors when heavy smoke is present. Trail and camp closures remain in effect until further notice. All trails and camps entering the park complex from Hannegan Pass Trailhead, including Copper Loop, to the junction of Big Beaver Trail, are closed. Camp closures include all camps between Boundary and Stillwell camps.
Visitors with backcountry reservations into the closure area should be aware that permits are cancelled on a rolling basis based on fire updates and closure conditions. Cancellation notifications and refunds are through the recreation.gov system.
