Colonial Creek, Newhalem, and Goodell campgrounds will see a fee increase to $16.00 per night beginning Saturday, May 23, 2015. North Cascades National Park Service Complex manages five vehicle access campgrounds with 365 sites and 300 wilderness and backcountry (near the lakes) camps. The additional revenue will be used to provide enhanced visitor services including repair and maintenance of facilities, capital improvements, enhanced amenities, resource protection and additional visitor programs and services. There will be an emphasis on park improvements prior to the NPS centennial anniversary in 2016. More campsites will also be added to www.reservation.gov so that visitors will be able to reserve and pay for their campsites online. Feedback from the public was overwhelmingly in support of the fee increase. The park received nearly 60 comments on both Facebook and Twitter. The feedback included a mixture of support for the fee increase as proposed, opposition, and suggestions for alternatives. The comments were evaluated and addressed in an effort to achieve consistency with similar facilities. A phased-in approach over the next several years will be used for fees for backcountry permit reservations and the addition of more campgrounds, such as Gorge Lake and Hozomeen, to the reservation system. |
