July 31, 2014 – Sedro Woolley, WA - North Cascades National Park Service Complex has announced a campfire ban at all campgrounds in the lower Stehekin Valley. The fire ban is being issued in response to the increased fire hazard brought about by dry fuel conditions, daily high winds, commitment of fire-fighting resources to ongoing project fires, and a forecast for dry thunderstorms accompanied by both gusty and sustained high winds. Effective Thursday, July 31, 2014, campfires will not be allowed in campgrounds from the Stehekin Landing to Tumwater Camp along the Stehekin Valley Road. Affected camps include:

  • Purple Point Overflow;
  • Purple Point;
  • Harlequin;
  • High Bridge; and
  • Tumwater
The ban will stay in effect until changes in conditions warrant lifting it.

Superintendent Karen Taylor-Goodrich asks that “All visitors to the beautiful Lake Chelan National Recreation Area help us protect life, property and natural resources by observing the ban and reporting any suspected fires.”
