NINETY SIX, SOUTH CAROLINA – Ninety Six National Historic Site is exited to welcome Visiting Artist Heather Heckel. She is an artist and art educator. Her award-winning artwork has been shown internationally and is in numerous national permanent collections. She is in her eleventh year of teaching public school art, and has taught at the college, high school, and middle school levels. She earned her BFA in Illustration from the Ringling College of Art and Design, her MAT in Art Education from the School of Visual Arts, her MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and her EdD in Educational Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands. Heckel will be on site for a week from July 10 to 17, 2024. During this time Heckel will work on new, original artwork influenced by Ninety Six National Historic Site.In addition, Heckel will provide public programs on July 13. At 11:00 am she will give an Artist Talk. During this talk she will present about her experience as an artist-in-residence for the National Park Service. She'll be showing her work in progress at Ninety Six National Historic Site, and discuss the materials and techniques used to interpret the park's flora, fauna, history, and culture. At 1:00 PM she will lead a Make Your Own Symmetrical Star Designs, a hands-on workshop where visitors will make art inspired by Ninety Six National Historic Site. In honor of the Star Fort, participants will use colors and shapes to create and decorate a symmetrical star design. This workshop is for all ages and abilities.
