Nancy B. Johnson, independent scholar, Humanities Nebraska, is scheduled to present the program “Myths of Women’s Madness on the Plains,” on September 25, 2025, at 6:00 pm CDT at the Niobrara National Scenic River Visitor Center.This presentation is made possible by Humanities Nebraska, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and Niobrara National Scenic River as part of the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau.
Johnson is an independent scholar with special interests in the history and literature of women and the Great Plains. With bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She is currently researching and writing while maintaining an active role as a community volunteer.
This presentation aims examines the myths and realities of Plains women as promoted in works of fiction and history based on recently published works, including diaries and journals. Johnson plans to discuss historical narratives and misconceptions surrounding women's mental health during the homesteading era.
Humanities Nebraska provides major funding for this program, the organization receives support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nebraska State Legislature, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and private donations.
