The Niobrara National Scenic River, in collaboration with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Nature Conservancy, is excited to announce a series of enchanting night sky events this fall. These events offer a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky and the fascinating nocturnal creatures that inhabit our region.

September 27 at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area at 8:00 p.m., visitors are invited to the Boardman Creek Campground for an evening under the stars. There will be a feature presentation on “Bats” that is scheduled to take place. Staff and volunteers from Niobrara National Scenic River and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will guide you through an exploration of the night sky and introduce you to the critters that flutter through the night.

October 17 at Niobrara Valley Preserve at 8:00 p.m. staff plan to offer "Adventure Through the Night Sky" with National Park Rangers and dedicated volunteers. Visitors can learn about the importance of night light to nocturnal animals, like owls, bats, and moths. This educational event aims to deepen understanding of the natural world and the creatures that thrive in the darkness.

October 18 at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area at 8:00 p.m. visitors are invited to return to the Boardman Creek Campground for another night of stargazing and nocturnal exploration. National Park Service Rangers and volunteers from the Niobrara National Scenic River and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be on hand to guide you through the wonders of the night sky and creatures that come alive after dark.

These events are free and open to the public. The State of Nebraska requires vehicle park entry permits for any motorized vehicle to enter any Nebraska State Park, State Historical Park or State Recreation Area. Permits can be purchased online through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission website, https://outdoornebraska.gov/permits/park-permits/, and at park entrances.Participants are encouraged to dress warmly, bring binoculars, telescopes, water, snacks, and a sense of wonder.
