Glen Jean, WV, April 1, 2013 - The National Park Service is working with Federal Highways to provide necessary repairs to Cunard Road. The repairs began in mid-March with anticipated full road closures Tuesday through Thursday during the month of April. These closures are now extended Monday through Friday, April 1 - 26th, due to safety concerns resulting from the construction work.
This access to the river for boaters, fisherman, campers, and hikers needed repairs from numerous storm events over the past two years that have caused six slips to the asphalt roadway. The roadway is dangerous to through traffic with drops of more than twelve inches. The contractors are performing four foot excavations as a result of the repair work to the base and sub-base of the roadway, preventing one lane openings particularly on the sharp curves of this access.
The Cunard Road Closures are as follows:
Full road closures can be expected from:
6:00 AM Monday through 6:00 PM Friday from April 1 through April 26th.
One lane of traffic utilizing single lane closures can be expected from:
6:00 AM Monday - 6:00 PM Friday, during daylight hours April 29th through May 12th.
Please note: There is a possibility of long delays during the paving process and the possibility of evening closures.
The Horse Trail Parking Lot is closed and for the contractor to use as a staging area. Please be aware that during road closures the road is closed to all through traffic including pedestrians.
