Contact: Terry Groves, 304 465-0508 Since January, National Park Service (NPS) maintenance crews have been hauling trash from park-owned properties in Fayette, Raleigh and Summers counties. “Most of these dumps were established before the park acquired these areas and unfortunately, people have continued to use them,” explained NPS Chief of Maintenance, James Minor.
“To date, our crews have taken almost 400,000 pounds of trash to the Raleigh County landfill, and over 25,000 pounds to local recycling centers,” said Minor.
NPS maintenance supervisor Terry Groves schedules six to eight employees to work with a five-person crew from the Civilian Conservation Corps of West Virginia. Sites being cleaned up include locations near Burnwood, Quinnimont, Layland, along Rt. 20 near Hinton, and on Rt. 26 near Sandstone Falls.
“We’ve had to drag large appliances and automobiles from steep slopes, so the work is physically very hard,” said NPS heavy equipment operator John Mann. “Day after day we keep at it, so it’s very discouraging when we find that someone has come in behind us and thrown out more trash.” “We hope that after cleaning up these areas the public and local communities will help us keep them from becoming trashed again,” added Groves. “If anyone sees or knows of anyone dumping refuse on park lands, please call the National Park Service at 304-465-0508, or our radio dispatch center at 304-256-1700.” |
