Brooks, WV - The National Park Service, working in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, announced today that that Camp Brookside Bridge, which provides the sole road access to the Camp Brookside area of New River Gorge National River in Summers County, will be closed for repairs during July and August. The closure will begin on Thursday, July 6, 2017, and is scheduled to be in effect for five weeks. During the repair work, the public will be unable to access the trailhead and river access point that is located just outside of the entrance gate to Camp Brookside Environmental Education Center, which will also be closed for the duration of the repairs.
Several issues need to be resolved to maintain the bridge for heavier use as the Camp Brookside area begins to be used more frequently. This project will ensure safe access for future visitors, including camp attendees, hikers, anglers, and boaters, as well as improved access for emergency services personnel. “We understand this temporary closure will be an inconvenience to some folks over the next few weeks,” said Lizzie Watts, Superintendent of New River Gorge National River. “However, with an improved bridge, we look forward to welcoming even more visitors to the Camp Brookside area in the coming years.”
