How do I get to Camp Brookside Environmental Education Center?

Camp location: Camp Brookside Environmental Education Center; 309 N Mullens Rd, Hinton, 25951

From Hinton, WV take Hwy 20 north one mile past Summers County High School, turn left onto North Mullens Road and follow the road to the left across two bridges and through the gate.

From Beckley, WV via I-64 east, take Exit 139 (Sandstone/Hinton) and turn left on Highway 20 South and travel 6 miles, turn right onto North Mullens Road and follow the road to the left across two bridges and through the gate.

What does my camper need to bring to camp?

Can my camper bring a cell phone or ipad?

Campers ARE NOT allowed to have any mobile devices at camp. This includes cell phones, iPads, tablets, e-readers, iPods, etc.

How can I get in touch in case of an emergency?

Campers may be permitted to use the camp phone as needed. Parents may also contact the Camp Director as needed (you will be able to contact the Camp Director or Deputy Director 24 hrs/day).

What will the campers do at camp?

All campers will participate in outdoor activities each day. Campers will go on one field trip to the Grandview area of the park and will participate in some outdoor recreational activities including a river trip, archery, fishing, hiking, campfires, and games. Campers will also participate in daily educational activities where they will learn about national parks, watersheds, habitats, animals, plants, and other natural and historic resources of the New River Gorge. These activities will all be hands on, fun, and engaging. All activities will be led by National Park Service staff.

What if my child does not want to participate in an activity?

All camp activities are “challenged by choice” and campers or parents should let camp staff know if accommodations are needed or campers do not want to participate in a certain activity.

Where will campers sleep?

All campers will sleep in cabin bunk beds. Each cabin will have four campers and two counselors. Camp Brookside is located on a secluded island with a gate that will be closed at night.

Who will be supervising my child at camp?

A Camp Director or Deputy Director will be on duty at the camp at all times along with 10 to 12 trained camp counselors. Two camp counselors will be assigned to each cabin. A camp nurse will also be on site throughout the week of camp. All campers will be under close supervision at all times.
