New Philadelphia National Historic Site is in rural western Illinois. It lies between the Mississippi and Illinois rivers near Interstate 72. You can access the site by turning onto 306th Lane from County Highway 2.

The small city of Barry lies two miles west and has the nearest food, gas, and services. Hannibal, Missouri, is 27 miles west. Springfield, Illinois, is 76 miles east. St. Louis lies about 115 miles south.

No regularly scheduled public transportation options are available to access the site.

Driving is the easiest way to visit. Parking is available at the information kiosk. There is no parking or turnarounds for RVs, busses, or trailers.

Directions from Springfield, Illinois (84 miles, 1 hour and 15 minutes)

  • Go west on Interstate 72, towards Hannibal, Missouri.
  • Take Exit 20 for Barry.
  • Turn left onto County Highway 4/Rodgers Street. Continue for 0.4 miles.
  • Then turn left onto Illinois 106 East and continue for 1.6 miles.
  • Turn left onto County Highway 2. Continue for 2.7 miles.
  • The site entrance and kiosk will be on the right.

Directions from Hannibal, Missouri (27 miles, 26 minutes)

  • Go east on Interstate 72, towards Springfield, Illionois.
  • Take Exit 20 for Barry.
  • Turn right onto County Highway 4/Rodgers Street. Continue for 0.2 miles.
  • Then turn left onto Illinois 106 East and continue for 1.6 miles.
  • Turn left onto County Highway 2. Continue for 2.7 miles.
  • The site entrance and kiosk will be on the right.

Directions from New Philadelphia to Interstate 72 (East and Westbound)

  • From the site entrance, turn left onto County Highway 2.
  • Continue for 2.7 miles.
  • Turn right onto Illinois 106 West and continue for 1.6 miles.
  • Then turn right onto County Highway 4/Rodgers Street.
  • Continue to the Interstate 72 entrance ramps.
