While we are a small staff, we do fill positions in interpretation, maintenance, administration, and cultural and natural resources. Some jobs are office-oriented, others focus on working with the public, and some involve working outdoors. Each job performs a vital function - that of providing visitors an opportunity to enjoy a meaningful expereince, while working hard to perserve natural and cultural resources for future generations.

The park hires interns through the Student Conservation Association and the Youth Conservation Corps. SCA participants do not need to be students. YCC participants must be age 15 to 18 and must be able to provide their own housing within commuting distance of their duty station.

  • Historical Interpretation Intern through the Student Conservation Association

    Job Summary:
    Join a small team of dedicated park employees working to help visitors remember the events surrounding the Nez Perce Flight of 1877, and the lasting effects on both the Nez Perce and American societies. Focus will be on the battle that occurred in the Big Hole Valley of southwestern Montana. The intern will receive training in formal and informal interpretation, become familiar with operations at a visitor center in a small national park, and gain knowledge on a variety of topics and issues regarding Nez Perce history and present day culture.

    Duties during the peak visitation season include staffing the visitor center, making bookstore sales, presenting talks, guided walks, and demonstartions. During the slower winter months, the intern will still be responsible for working the front desk at the visitor center, but there will be additional time available to complete a variety of projects.
