Turf Management

Located in the heart of the nation's capital, the National Mall is "America's Front Yard" where millions of people walk on to visit iconic memorials, museums, and government buildings in downtown Washington, DC. The open green spaces are also continuously used for thousands of events, such as festivals, concerts, and athletics, which can cause significant wear on the lawn. In an effort to keep the grass green for the enjoyment of visitors, residents, and event holders, the National Park Service has a plan for managing the turf across the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

Permitted Activities

Permitted activities, such as athletic events, festivals, concerts, demonstrations, and other gatherings regularly occur on the green spaces of National Mall and Memorial Parks. Permits are granted through the Division of Permits Management. Permit holders are responsible for following rules and regulations to protect the lawns in an effort to preserve the quality of the turf and scenery of the parks for regular park visitors and other permitted events.
