Mount Rushmore National Memorial invites the public to participate in several
upcoming scoping meetings about the development of a new General Management
Plan. The memorial will be preparing the plan and accompanying Environmental
Impact Statement over the next four years. The management team is looking for public
input about the meaningful connections visitors have had with the memorial over the
years and input on the future plans for the park.

The last General Management Plan for the memorial was completed in 1980. Since
then, the memorial has expanded, visitation has increased, security has changed for
America’s icons, and the memorial staff has expanded the interpretation of the
memorial to encompass the rich diversity of the history of the United States. The new
plan will help the management team at Mount Rushmore make decisions on the
direction of resource management, visitor use and interpretation, and facilities
management.

The planning team has scheduled public scoping meetings for December 10 and 11
around the Black Hills. The times and locations are listed below. If you are unable to
attend a meeting, you may comment by December 29 on the National Park Service’s
public comment website, https://parkplanning.nps.gov.
