KEYSTONE, SD: Superintendent Cheryl Schreier announced fire restrictions have been lifted at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The Central and Southern Black Hills have experienced higher moisture levels and a downgrade to moderate fire danger. Moderate fire conditions mean accidental fires can start, however fire starts can normally be contained. Fire caution is still recommended particularly on windy days. "While we are still under drought conditions, recent cool weather and snows have weakened the fire potential," stated Superintendent Schreier. Visitors should always use caution when hiking or climbing in the backcountry maintaining an awareness of their surroundings at all times. Please remember that open fires are not permitted at the memorial. For additional information, regarding park operations visit the website www.nps.gov/moru or call the park at 605-574-2523. |
