NPS Incident Management Team Hurricane Florence September 25 Update

Harkers Island, N.C. – The National Park Service Incident Management Team (IMT) is responding to national parks impacted by Hurricane Florence. At this time, 80 National Park Service employees from 34 parks and 19 states and the District of Columbia are assigned to the incident. The public should not enter closed areas of parks until stabilization and restoration efforts are complete.

Cape Lookout National Seashore – CLOSED

  • All visitor facilities and services are closed, a reopening schedule is not available at this time.

  • Repairs of the Harkers Island Visitor Center Harbor docks continue.

  • Cape Lookout Lighthouse has been repaired and is operational.

  • Emergency stabilization to the damaged structures at Les and Sally area and Historic Cape Lookout Village has been completed.

  • Staff have identified two miles of the Back Island Sand Road on North Core Banks which will need to be rerouted.

  • Staff continue to survey and flag the Back Island Sand Road on South Core Banks.

  • Reservations for Long Point Cabins have been canceled for the remainder of the season.

  • Reservations for the Great Island Cabins have been canceled through October 25.

    • Cancellations may be extended depending on the results of full assessments. An update will be provided once assessments are complete.


Moores Creek National Battlefield – CLOSED

  • Flood waters continue to recede (approximately 1 foot), however over 50% of the park remains flooded.

  • Debris removal from visitor center parking lot and entrance road has been completed, additional work in administrative areas will continue until water recedes from public areas

  • Formal assessments and stabilization cannot begin until water recedes.

  • A reopening schedule is not available at this time.
