On Wednesday, August 21st, the National Park Service will host a volunteer service day at Montezuma Well to remove invasive plants. Johnson grass, a highly invasive species, has increasingly been a problem in the pasture at Montezuma Well. Our natural resources team will be removing the grass in the pasture and the traditional use garden from 8:30am-10:00am. Rangers will be onsite to train and give direction to anyone willing and able to contribute. It is important the seed heads are properly bagged when removing in order to prevent spread of this invasive species. Johhnson grass can out compete native plants and take away critical migratory pollinator habitat.

Please meet in the picnic area at 8:30am for a safety message and training. Wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, bring gloves, sun protection and water. Long sleeves are highly recommended. Trash bags, hand clippers and loppers will be provided. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our Traditional Use Garden and sign up as a reoccurring volunteer as well.

Our staff will make every effort to ensure that children and adults of all abilities are fully included in all of our recreation programs, facilities, and parks. For questions about accessible amenities or to let us know how we may best meet your needs in any of our programs, please call Krystina Isaac, Lead Interpreter at (928) 567-3322x228.
