Concord, MA. Minute Man National Historical Park has announced that the North Bridge Trail, located in Concord, Massachusetts will begin an extensive rehabilitation beginning May 15, 2018. Sections of the trail at North Bridge (west side) will be closed. There will be no pedestrian access to the North Bridge from the west side, (Liberty Street side) while the project is underway. Access to the North Bridge will be available from Monument Street (east side). The project begins May 21 to June 15, 2018. Additional work at North Bridge east side will begin June 16, 2018.

The North Bridge, a signature feature at Minute Man National Historical Park, is a site of national significance and has become a major focus of historical programming, contemplation and commemoration. The trail runs from Monument Street on the east side of the Concord River and goes to North Bridge. The trail continues on the the west side to North Bridge Visitor Center ¼ mile away. The  bridge was the site of the encounter of British Army and colonial militia and minute companies on the morning of April 19, 1775, sparking the beginning of the American Revolution.

“This is second phase of a major rehabilitation, which included the Battle Road Trail that has just has just been completed.” said BJ Dunn, Superintendent at Minute Man National Historical Park. “I see the heavy use of the trail and I think the community and visitors to the trail will understand the brief inconvenience of the partial and temporary trail closure when they see the repairs and maintenance, which will improve the trail surface and drainage,” added Dunn.  Fundoing for the project is made available from the National Park Service (NPS) Fee Demonstration Fund. These fees are collected by national parks as entrance fees and are used to address internal improvements in parks.

Henry General Contracting, Inc, from Springfield, Massachusetts, has been awarded the contract for the project. In addition to the areas around the Hartwell Tavern area, sections of North Bridge trail will be partially closed beginning April 23, 2018 and continue to the end of June, 2018.

Questions about the project can be directed to Margie Coffin Brown, Resources Manager at Minute Man National Historical Park. Margie Coffin Brown can be reached at Margie_Coffin_Brown@nps.gov.
