On Thursday, September 12 and Friday, September 13, Mesa Verde National Park will host a Zuni fetish carving demonstration by Eldred and Marilyn Quam, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This free demonstration will be at the park’s Visitor and Research Center, located at the park entrance, just off US Highway 160. Eldred and Marilyn will demonstrate how they carve a variety of stone types into the desired shapes, and explain the polishing and finishing process. They will have a number of finished pieces available for sale.
Marilyn Chuyate Quam and Eldred Quam are a husband and wife team of Zuni carvers known for their small fetishes. Marilyn and Eldred are known and respected for their detailed carvings, representative of the Zuni culture, and are featured in the book "Zuni Fetishes and Carvings," by Kent McManis.
The Mesa Verde Museum Association, the park’s non-profit partner, is the sponsor of this special event. In cooperation with the National Park Service and Mesa Verde National Park, the Association, established in 1930, assists and supports various interpretive programs, the Four Corners Lecture Series, research activities, and visitor services. Through a publishing program and the operation of retail stores, the association provides educational material and programs for visitors to Mesa Verde National Park. These resources enhance the visitor experience, and all proceeds help support the park. Learn more at https://www.mesaverde.org.
