The 2019 Mesa Verde National Park Artist in Residence Program (AIR) kicks off with composer and performer Adam Goodwin. Adam, a double bassist, composer, and visual artist, will offer two free public programs entitled: Composing with Nature, where he will perform on the double bass, interpreting the sounds and surroundings of the park. Following the performances Adam will discuss composition in relation to environmental stimuli such as natural patterns, weather systems, animal sounds, and geological processes. The first program takes place at the Far View Lodge Library in Mesa Verde National Park, Thursday, May 9 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The second program will be at the Mancos Public Library, Friday May 10 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. In addition, Adam may be found playing music along the trails throughout the park during the first two weeks of May.

Originally from Texas, Adam currently lives in Berlin, Germany. He brings a unique approach to his musical interpretations of nature. As a composer and interpreter, he strives to return to a primordial mode of expression, which places the highest priority on the individuality of the performer and the spontaneity of each unique moment. After completing degrees in classical and contemporary double bass performance, Adam has expanded his musical output to include a wide variety of genres, approaches, and techniques, including acoustic free improvisation, electro-acoustic composition, precisely composed “new music” scores, experimental rock, and traditional Turkish, Greek and Arabic music. Adam has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.

Mesa Verde National Park’s Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program provides professional artists the opportunity to become part of a long established tradition of artists creating art in our national parks. The AIR program is managed for the park by the nonprofit Mesa Verde Museum Association. Learn more at https://www.nps.gov/meve/getinvolved/artists_in_residence.htm and at www.mesaverde.org.
