High School and College Students --> Below, you'll find an overview of a wide variety of internship and job opportunities within the park.

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller works in partnership with the Student Conservation Association, the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, the National Park Foundation, and the Upper Valley Trails Alliance to offer meaningful stewardship experiences for youth. Teens can conduct trail maintenance, forest management, interpretive programs, and career explorations. Contact: 802-457-3368 x255 for more information.

2022 Youth Engagement Opportunities

Camper, Mountains and Rivers Forever, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

August 1-5, Monday through Wednesday 9-4 and an overnight camping trip Thursday-Friday. Participate in the coolest summer day camp around!

  • Qualifications: Ages 11-15; ability to be active and outside in all types of weather for an entire day; sense of adventure and creativity; willingness to work within a group.
  • Responsibilities: Full participation in all camp educational, recreational and work activities; have all required gear daily, abide by all of the camp’s rules and policies.
  • Benefits: Exploration of natural and cultural resources in the Woodstock area, woodcarving skills, trail building experience, art creation, kayaking, swimming, and hiking among other activities.
  • Dates: August 1-5, Monday through Wednesday 9-4 and an overnight camping trip Thursday- Friday.

Camper, STEAM Camp, Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park

August 1-5, Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm

  • Qualifications: For students entering 7th, 8th and 9th grades; ability to be active and outside in all types of weather for part of the day; sense of creativity and willingness to be part of our Steam Team.
  • Responsibilities: Full participation in all camp activities; have required gear daily, abide by all the camp’s rules and policies.
  • Benefits: Explore all the ways STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and math – is evident at Saint-Gaudens NHP & be inspired to create.

Corps Member, Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) Resoure Management Crew

June 20-July 9, Monday-Thursday 7:45am-5:00pm

Be part of an eight-member team tackling a diversity of conservation projects at Marsh-Billings- Rockefeller NHP. Up to 6 positions available locally and more state-wide
  • Responsibilities: Conduct high priority conservation work projects at Marsh-Billings- Rockefeller NHP, such as trail maintenance, invasive plant management, native plant restoration, forest management, and more. Participate in daily and weekly VYCC activities including team building, educational workshops, and evaluations. Learn about the national park and community resources. Contribute to a highly motivated and functional crew.
  • Qualifications: Ages 15-17. Strong desire to work hard and make a difference. Open to learning and receiving feedback. Ability to work long hours both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Benefits: Weekly stipend, dependent on crew type. Opportunity to earn academic or internship credits.

Crew Leader, Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC), Resource Management Crew

May 23-August 22, with potential for extension in fall

Lead a dynamic team of diverse local youth to address key resource management projects at Marsh- Billings-Rockefeller NHP and learn about the ecology and history of this nationally unique site. Up to 2 positions available locally; additional positions available on residential crews throughout the state.

  • Responsibilities: Serve as a teacher, work supervisor, and a role model for a crew of 10 young adults. A team of two Crew Leaders will professionally manage high priority conservation work projects at the national park, teach young adults life and job skills, facilitate crew education and leadership development, oversee the crew’s health and safety, and uphold VYCC work policies.
  • Qualifications: Minimum age of 22; background in education, parks and recreation management, environmental studies, or related fields; leadership experience with diverse groups of young people in the outdoors; excellent organizational and communication skills; strong work ethic and ability to work long days in challenging conditions; Standard First Aid/CPR or equivalent; good driving record and valid driver’s license.
  • Benefits: $650-695/week, technical and leadership skills training

Natural Resources Intern, Student Conservation Association (SCA), Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller and Saint-Gaudens National Historical Parks

May 23-August 13

College students and recent graduates assist the Resource Manager in a variety of projects. 12-week, full time program.

  • Qualifications: Interest in natural resource management; dedication to learning about invasive species; ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; ability to work both independently and with a team.
  • Responsibilities: Survey and manage invasive plants (70%); creating and installing informational and closure signs for forest management activities; trail maintenance; meeting with the public to explain forest management practices; salamander cover board and water quantity monitoring; lumber stacking and solar-kiln operation; using hand-held GPS units; data entry; and training other employees and volunteers in resource management activities.
  • Benefits: $250 stipend per week; AmeriCorps Education Award eligibility; $40 weekly commuting allowance; $1,100 to/from site travel expense reimbursement (car required); and housing, if needed. Training in invasive plant identification and management; tool use; and principles of forest management. Experience working in multiple park division. Hours count toward the 640 needed for Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority eligibility.

Seasonal Intern, Horticulturist, Student Conservation Association (SCA), Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

May 23-October 9

The Horticulturalist Intern will assist the park’s cultural landscape staff in all aspects of caring for thesite’s historic cultural landscape. 20-week, full time program.

  • Qualifications: Interest in plants and gardening; ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; ability to work both independently and with a team.
  • Responsibilities: The preservation of historically and/or botanically significant plants; Flower garden maintenance including planting, watering, dead heading, weeding, fertilizing; flower arranging; assisting with bedding plant selection, and layout; Hedge maintenance including pruning, mulching, fertilizing, watering; IPM (Integrated Pest Management); Shrub and vine maintenance including pruning, mulching, watering, fertilizing; Estate tree maintenance including watering, mulching, fertilizing; Turf maintenance; Assist the gardener with the diagnosis of plant nutrition and pest control deeds, fertilization and herbicides; Trail and gravel road maintenance; Maintenance of small engine equipment

Seasonal Intern, Preservation and Facilities Management, Student Conservation Association (SCA), one position at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller and one position at Saint-Gaudens

May 30-October 16

Interns will work with a highly skilled team of historic preservation staff and will perform various duties in the upkeep and preservation of the historic structures and cultural landscapes. 20 week full-time program.

  • Qualifications: Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; interest in working both independently and with a team; ability to be physically active for the duration of a workday.
  • Responsibilities: Assisting grounds staff with clearing and maintaining gardens and historic hedges and grape vines, and lawn mowing; assisting with carpentry projects (based on skill set); assisting with special events held in the Parks by setting up tents and providing event support; cleaning, monitoring and providing quality facilities (visitor center, park offices, park buildings, restrooms, meeting spaces and outside patios and walkways); and possibly painting and helping maintain exhibit spaces.
  • Benefits: $250 stipend per week; $2,147 AmeriCorps Education Award eligibility; $40 weekly commuting allowance; $1,100 to/from site travel expense reimbursement (car required); and housing, if needed. Resource Management Intern, Student Conservation Association (SCA), Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

This position will be part of a team assisting in a two-park Resource Management program working in natural resources. 1-year, full time program.
  • Qualifications: Interest in natural resource management; dedication to learning about invasive species; ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; ability to work both independently and with a team. College degree or coursework in a science-related field.
  • Responsibilities: Survey and management of invasive plants (20%), collecting, and entering data into park databases and geographic information systems (20%), coordinating and publicizing school and “Working Woodlands” programs, citizen science programs, and public contact (40%), and assisting with other park management and education projects (20%).
  • Benefits: $250 stipend per week; $6,345 AmeriCorps Education Award eligibility; $40 weekly commuting allowance; $1,100 to/from site travel expense reimbursement (car required); and $1000/month housing stipend. Museum Education Fellow, Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP), American Conservation Experience (ACE) position at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller and one position at Saint-Gaudens

May 9, 2022-April 2023

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces undergraduate and graduate students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the National Park Service. Interns will work within Curatorial and Interpretation departments to maintain collections and provide education to the public and school groups. 1-year, full time program.

  • Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and/or related experience within the fields of art, museum studies, or history; ability to work both independently and with a team; comfortable interacting with the public.
  • Responsibilities: Assist with collections management and preservation; assist with curating exhibits and developing interpretive experiences for the public; support school group curriculum development and visits
