From a personal perspective, I found that one of the greatest things about being an intern at the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park this summer is the spontaneity. There were so many things I learned from this internship that are so valuable to what I do in my life. For example, since I came to Vermont from Boston, I gained exposure interacting with people who have a very different lifestyle and land that I have only seen in pictures on the web. It is almost embarrassing to say but I have never cooked a dinner meal prior to this summer. My parents always cooked for me and if they were busy I sneaked over to eat dinner with my neighbors or went to the pizza shop around the corner. I get so excited to work with the rangers who inspire me to learn and explore the environment and its history that their passion rubs off on me because I get just as excited playing their roles when working with the junior rangers. Working with kids, learning from the rangers, living independently, gaining exposure to new people and places, building an emotional connection with the environment, and all the other wonderful things I got to experience at my Quechee home and at work were the highlights of my summer internship. It has been full of great surprises and I hope to continue being involved with the National Park Service in the future.
